Product Review

Chicago-style softball - It was created during the 1920's using an oversized 16" softball. Over time the ball became soft and squishy, so everyone in town - rich or poor - could play the game in the streets without using a baseball mitt. That famous oversized softball became known as a "Chicago-Style Softball." Champro's Chicago-Stye 16" softball is constructed with the same durable 100% cowhide leather cover, Kapok core and unique hand-stitched seams which gives this softball its unusual look. The seams are hidden behind the interlocking cover, making this softball more durable - ideal for use on rough playgrounds, grass and asphalt. These oversized 16" circumference softballs are designed for limited flight and will get softer after some use.

If you are looking for a mushball for family picnics this might work. The ball is definitely soft enough for athletic people to catch barehanded; has a slight sponge feeling to it. Beware however that you should give the ball a good break-in a couple days before using as it will help soften it quiet a bit once clobbered around. Also good hitters will send it a long way, so you might want to use a big enough field. So far it still bounces pretty high on hard landings to the ground, don't know if that will hold though. Ball's momentum also dies in a hurry once it hits the ground so that's a plus for safety. Only real negative I have seen is that the ball might be difficult for some small children to throw because of its large size. Oh and the seams are just a little smaller than expected but its not an issue at all.
